Understanding ADHD in Children and Teens

Do you know a child who can't sit still, seems to constantly interrupt, or struggles to follow even simple instructions, no matter how clearly they’re given? While it’s common for kids to forget homework, act impulsively, or daydream during class, ongoing issues with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity may be signs of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a child’s ability to regulate attention, manage impulses, and stay on task. It can show up in a variety of ways, from constant motion and blurting out answers to quietly zoning out and missing instructions.

As a Certified Clinical Counsellor in Alberta—and someone with lived experience of ADHD—I understand firsthand the challenges ADHD can create, not just for the individual, but for families, classrooms, and social dynamics. That’s why I offer specialized ADHD therapy for children, youth, and their caregivers, focused on practical strategies that work with—not against—the ADHD brain.

Signs of ADHD in Children

ADHD symptoms typically fall into three categories: inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children with ADHD may:

  • Have trouble focusing or staying on task

  • Appear not to listen when spoken to

  • Fidget, squirm, or leave their seat at inappropriate times

  • Interrupt others or blurt out answers

  • Talk excessively or at the wrong time

  • Act impulsively without considering consequences

  • Seem disorganized, forgetful, or easily distracted

  • Struggle with transitions or emotional regulation

  • Become easily frustrated or overwhelmed

Not all children exhibit the same combination of traits. Some may seem constantly in motion; others may appear quiet and dreamy but are still struggling internally to focus and follow through.

The Impact of Untreated ADHD

Without the right support, ADHD can affect a child’s:

  • Academic success (missed homework, low grades)

  • Self-esteem (constant correction, feeling "bad" or "lazy")

  • Friendships (social challenges, impulsive behavior)

  • Family life (tension, emotional outbursts, caregiver stress)

That’s why early intervention—especially through therapy tailored to ADHD—is so important. With proper strategies and understanding, children can thrive both academically and emotionally.

How Therapy Can Help

I offer ADHD therapy in Calgary and throughout Alberta, both in person and virtually. My approach is grounded in:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – to address unhelpful thoughts and develop practical skills

  • Strength-Based Therapy – focusing on what your child does well to build motivation and confidence

  • Emotional Regulation Tools – helping kids identify and manage big feelings

  • Executive Functioning Support – improving time management, planning, and follow-through

  • Parent Support & Collaboration – empowering caregivers with tools that reduce conflict and support success at home and school

I also bring a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming perspective to my work. I don’t pathologize ADHD—I support each child’s unique learning style and help them build on their natural strengths.

My Personal & Professional Connection to ADHD

I’m not only trained to help individuals with ADHD—I’ve lived it. As someone who has been diagnosed with ADHD myself, I understand the experience from the inside out. This gives me a deep empathy and insight into what your child may be going through, and how we can create realistic, sustainable strategies that actually work.
